Earth Space Exploration Program: Double Star program

The double satellite program is a groundbreaking satellite exploration initiative in China, and it is also a representing a significant milestone in space exploration led by China and the first scientific collaboration with Europe.

The historical background of earth space exploration

In the first half of the 20th century,We had limited knowledge about the Earth’s outer atmosphere and ionosphere, let alone phenomena occurring in the vast expanse of solar and Earth space.Due to the limitation of observation means,we can only observe the geomagnetic changes on the ground. However, geomagnetic stations around the world have for a long time carried out precise observation and analysis of various changes in the geomagnetic field, and through these data we can infer the outer space causes of these changes.

The”Double Star Program”is a source of pride for Chinese scientists and a milestone in leading international cooperation. In 1997,the Space Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences put forward the idea of using two satellites with intersecting orbits to conduct a large range of synchronous magnetospheric space exploration. This program not only marks the first cooperation between China and Europe in the field of scientific exploration, but also a space exploration project independently proposed and led by China. Two tiny satellites orbit the Earth in a large elliptical orbit, respectively,to detect the equatorial region and the polar region,to analyze the mystery of the change of the Earth’s space environment.

This project is not only the focus of the national civil space”Tenth Five-Year Plan”,but also the first time that China has incorporated clear space science issues into the satellite model.Through the detection of broad-spectrum particles and high-precision magnetic fields,we will have an in-depth understanding of the changing laws of the Earth’s space environment, providing valuable data for future scientific research. The program demonstrates China’s ambitions in the space field,as well as the wisdom and strength of Chinese scientists.

Scientific research purpose of earth space exploration

China’s Geospace double satellite exploration program is mainly used to study the physical process of magnetospheric space storms and catastrophic geospace weather triggered by solar activities and interplanetary disturbances, and then establish physical models of magnetospheric space storms, dynamic models of geospatial environment and forecasting methods,so as to provide corresponding countermeasures and scientific basis for space activities and maintenance of human living environment.

About the satellite:

The double satellite program consists of two small satellites:Probe 1(equatorial)and Probe 2(polar).

The Probe 1 satellite is used to detect the process of magnetospheric space burst in the near-Earth magnetotail region and the transmission of solar wind energy to the magnetosphere in the sunward and magnetopause region

The Probe 2 satellite is used to detect the transmission of solar wind energy and near-Earth magnetic tail energy to the polar ionosphere and upper atmosphere to transport ionospheric particles into the magnetosphere

The two small satellites operate in important active areas not yet covered by international geospace exploration satellites and cooperate with each other

At present after assessment acceptance delivery passed by competent departments State Chinese Academy Sciences satellites have carried out good joint observation activities obtained large amount scientific research data under normal operation various scientific instruments.
